Perseverance

Hello friends! What a glorious day it is today! The sun is finally shining here in the unusually cold Midwest, there’s one less terrorist mastermind in the world plotting against our country, and my story A Wise Woman’s Revenge, finally helped me break through the market that is SNM Horror Magazine! I’m ecstatic! Those of you that have been following me will know that I made a couple of New Year’s resolutions back in January. I promised to submit four stories a month to various markets for a total of 48 this year and I promised I WOULD be selected for an issue of SNM. Well the four a month has gone by the wayside, but I did very well until last month and had a good reason to give up on that one. Stan Swanson, editor and owner of Dark Moon Digest and Dark Moon Books, gave me the opportunity to publish my own anthology, Ad Naseum, which will be out sometime this Fall! So, I will be only submitting to him until we have collected all of the necessary stories.

This brings me to my second goal. SNM. Although my February submission (my first to this magazine) came very close to being selected, March and April just weren’t a good fit for the subject. Then comes the May Medieval issue. Having just found out about Stan’s incredible offer, I still had an idea for this month and thought I would give it one last shot before devoting myself solely to Ad Naseum. What started out as a horror story about the persecution of witch’s during colonial times, took an unexpected twist and became what I feel is a tale of compassion. I was sure that it would be rejected. In fact, it was due in by April 20th and I had it ready on the 1st, but didn’t turn it in until the 19th. I then waited for the usual rejection. You can imagine my surprise when, not only was it selected, but it won 3rd place for the month! Holy cats! Talk about feeling like a rock-star!

There are so many things in our lives that we expect to fail at. Tests, relationships, job interviews, and contests. Some people justify their lack of action in these areas with the excuse, Well I wouldn’t have succeeded at that anyway! My challenge to you my friends, this day and every day, is to take that leap and try it anyway. You cannot accept failure if you never tried. Perseverance can make all the difference. Just because you have buried your dreams under a life time of baggage, doesn’t mean that they are gone. Clear away the garbage and give it a try. You wouldn’t believe what a little hard work and determination will get you if you just get over you FEAR of failure. Look at me. I have written my whole life, but only tried to publish for the first time a year ago! Now I have a book deal and am hacking away at other markets and actually making it! You may be a writer, or a painter, or maybe you have an idea that will change the world! Don’t be afraid of failure, it only stings for a short while. Embrace your potential and grab your own future! The alternative is a life of complacent mediocrity, and I can think of few things scarier than that!
